Luther College Choirs
Over the years the Luther College choirs have developed a reputation for excellence through the consistent high quality and musical standards they show in their performances. The Luther choirs have won many choral music competitions and been awarded countless honours and prizes over the years. Competitions include the Saskatchewan Music Festival, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's national amateur choir radio competition, and Unifest, a competition involving choirs from the three prairie provinces and sponsored by the University of Saskatchewan.
There are several choirs at Luther College. The Senior Choir is made up of boys and girls from grades 11 and 12, while the Girls Choir consists of girls from grades 9 and 10. The Handbell choir is open to all grades and selections from the handbell choir add a unique beauty and variety to the choral concerts. AVE, the Advanced Vocal Ensemble, is a group of about fifteen advanced choral singers who supplement the Senior Choir with different styles of choral singing.
The choirs perfom numerous times each year in schools, churches, conventions and celebrations. The choirs also perform annually at the Candlelight service before Christmas, and a Home Concert at the end of the choir season. The choirs are renowned for the variety, high quality and wide range of repertoire it presents, which includes choral music from Canadian composers, folk songs, hymns, pop and jazz arrangements, and classical music from the renaissance to the twentieth century.
Each year, the Luther choirs take a spring tour. The choirs have travelled and performed over its many years from coast to coast in Canada. Audiences from St. John's, Newfoundland to Victoria, British Columbia have enthusiastically responded to their concerts. The Senior Choir has also toured in the United States as far south as Arizona and California and as far east as New York City. In 1998 the Senior Choir toured in eastern Cuba, performing in art's schools, community concerts and churches such as the cathedral in Santiago and the basilica in Cobre. This year, the Senior Choir members are looking forward to returning to Cuba this spring.
The Senior Choir has recorded several CDs, which are available through the Lions Den online store. Please visit their website for more information.
